Best practice guidance, support materials and FAQs – everything your business needs to prepare for the provision of The Calorie Labelling (Out of Home Sector) (England) Regulations 2021.

Why is Obesity a Growing Concern?

Tackling obesity is one of the greatest long-term health challenges faced by the UK. Obesity is associated with reduced life expectancy, cardiovascular disease and a range of chronic illnesses.

  • The majority of adults in the UK (63%) are above a healthy weight.
  • Of these, half are living with obesity.
  • 1 in 3 children are overweight with 1 in 5 living with obesity.
Obesity prevalence is highest amongst the most deprived groups in society. Children in the most deprived parts of the country are more than twice as likely to be obese as their peers living in the richest areas. This is worrying because it sets the scene for health inequality and adult disease from childhood.

Calories on Menus Will Soon be a Requirement in England

From the 6th April 2022, certain businesses in England will have to display the calorie content of the food they sell. It’s part of new legislation that was introduced in 2021 to tackle obesity. The initiative applies to large out-of home food businesses, including restaurants, cafes and takeaways with more than 250 employees.

Long before this new regulation, calorie labelling has been at the forefront of efforts to help consumers make better food choices. The UK first introduced voluntary calorie labelling as part of a 2012 Public Health Responsibility Deal. Over 40 businesses, representing over 9,500 outlets, signed up to provide calorie information on food eaten out of the home. In 2018, the UK public health body Public Health England launched a campaign to reduce calories in foods by 20% by 2024.
